Astrology 101 · Chapter 3

Sun, Moon and rising sign

Your Big Three: who you are at your core, what you need inside, and how you meet the world.

The Sun sign is the one most people know: the sign the Sun was moving through when you were born. It speaks to your core identity, what gives you energy and the kind of person you are becoming. Because the Sun spends about a month in each sign, it is shared by many people and is only the beginning of a reading.

The Moon changes sign every two to three days, so it is far more personal. It describes your emotional life: what makes you feel safe, how you react before you think, and what you need from the people close to you. Many people recognise themselves more in their Moon than in their Sun.

The rising sign, or Ascendant, is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It changes roughly every two hours, which is why it needs an accurate birth time. It describes your instinctive approach to new situations and the first impression you make, and it sets the starting point of the twelve houses.
